BP signs deal to develop clean energy in China

23 January 2008 - Integrated energy major BP has signed a series of agreements to increase its clean energy commitment, including clean coal conversion technologies and wind power generation.

BP and the China Academy of Sciences (CAS) have signed an agreement to undertake a feasibility study under the proposed Clean Energy Commercialization Centre (CECC) joint venture.

Under the agreement, CECC is intended to integrate clean energy related technologies like coal gasification, coal to liquids, coal to chemical, carbon capture and storage, coal bed methane and underground gasification from CAS institutes and other organizations into integrated feedstock manufacturing, product distribution systems and polygeneration complexes.

BP has also signed a framework agreement with Beijing Tianrun New Energy Investment Company, a subsidiary of Goldwind Science and Technology Company, with the intention of jointly investing, constructing and operating three 49.5 MW wind power plants near Bayan Obo in the Inner Mongolia region of China.

The two parties have also agreed to explore further wind power investment opportunities in other areas of Inner Mongolia.
