Danish Dong to go ahead with 200 MW Horns Rev II wind project

1 May 2007 - Denmark's Dong Energy has decided to go ahead with the development of the 200 MW Horns Rev II offshore wind farm in the North Sea, the company said in a statement.

Building work is expected to begin in 2008, and the wind farm is to be commissioned in 2009, Dong said. Danish energy company Energi E2 initially won a license to develop the wind farm in December 2005, but the company joined forces with Dong in 2006 after a merger, which also included Elsam, Energi E2, Nesa, Copenhagen Energy's power activities and Frederiksberg Forsyning.

The wind farm would be built in the North Sea offshore Esbjerg, which is north of the existing 160 MW Horns Rev offshore wind farm. The total investment of the new project is estimated at DKr 3.5 bn ($65.02m).

A spokeswoman for Dong, Louise Munter, said the company had decided to go ahead with the development after carrying out an investigation of conditions on the site, including wind levels.

"The decision to proceed with Horns Rev II is in line with the company's strategy of ensuring a balanced portfolio of generation assets. The anticipated installed capacity of approximately 200 MW is expected to have an annual production of more than 800 GWh, which corresponds to the electricity consumed by approximately 200 000 Danish homes," Dong said in a statement.
