Distributed generation is the term used to describe the production of electricity by a large number of small-scale generators, such as micro-hydro systems and homes with solar PV panels. In the past it has been difficult for these generators to connect to the low voltage local electricity network because of various technical and bureaucratic issues. However, as part of the Government's drive to increase the amount of renewable electricity being generated in the UK, Ofgem has changed the regulatory regime in this area and announced funding support for Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to improve the efficiency of their systems.
30 April 2004 - A substantial contract to upgrade the operator control system at the Medway Power Station has been completed by ABB, working with site engineers. The new operator display system provides real state-of-the-art management and control facilities and is the first major upgrade to the control system since the plant was opened in 1996.
