17 February 2004 - Tokyo Electric Power Co. is set to request approval from Aomori Prefecture and Mutsu to build in that city an interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel.
President Tsunehisa Katsumata and other senior executives will visit officials of these local governments Wednesday.
Mutsu has already announced that it will invite Tepco to set up such a facility there. But Tepco has yet to begin administrative procedures with Aomori Prefecture.
An interim storage facility will keep spent nuclear fuel before it is transported to a reprocessing plant. In November 2000, Mutsu asked Tepco to study the feasibility of constructing a storage centre in that municipality.
Tepco reported in April 2003 that construction is feasible, prompting Mutsu in June to extend to the firm an invitation to build such a facility.
Tepco plans to establish a joint storage and management firm with Japan Atomic Power Co. and others to construct a facility with a storage capacity of about 3000 t by 2010.
