23 December 2003 - Huaneng Power International Inc. the State Council, China's cabinet, has approved its feasibility study on the two 1000 MW coal-fired generating units in Zhejiang province.

The two generation units in Yuhuan city of Zhejiang in eastern China will start operations in the second half of 2007 and in the first half of 2008, respectively. They will be connected to the east China Power Grid.

The power plant had been approved by the State Development and Planning Committee in March. The total investment, based on the 2002 pricing level, is estimated to be about ¥ 8.49bn, with shareholders providing 25 per cent of the capital. Huaneng will contribute 90 per cent of the shareholder investment. The remaining 75 per cent will be financed by bank loans.

Huaneng, one of China's largest power producers, currently has a generation capacity of 15 936 MW.
