Emerson's Rosemount® MSR Annubars in use at Czech nuclear power plant

06/09/2003

AUSTIN, TEXAS, June 9, 2003 -- Temelin Nuclear Power Station, located in the Czech Republic, installed several Rosemount® Main Steam Return line (MSR) Annubars on high pressure steam flow at critical monitoring points.

The Rosemount Annubars are products of Emerson Process Management. The power station chose to install the MSR Annubars because of the rugged application conditions, simple installation procedure, and because of the low Permanent Pressure Loss (PPL) created by the Annubar sensor. By utilizing MSR Annubars, ongoing cost savings were achieved.

The MSR is based on Averaging Pitot Tube (APT) technology and is used in applications where conditions exceed the structural limits of standard Annubar models. Specifically, the combination of high temperature, high pressure, and high flow rates require the additional strength of the MSR. Available in Incoloy 800HT, Temelin found the MSR to be a cost effective device that was resistant to the corrosive effects of high pressure steam.

Temelin required the measurements to be made in existing lines and found the insertion technology based MSR to provide a simple, low-cost installation procedure. The MSR is installed by drilling two holes in the pipe, welding on the mounting hardware and inserting the unit through the pipe. Not only did this produce savings in installation time and labor, the MSR was delivered with all of the mounting hardware required - no special flanges or pipe cutting was required.

The MSR Annubar sensor creates minimal blockage in the pipe, which reduces PPL. This was a key factor in the power station selecting APT technology over other DP Flow products. Ongoing operational costs are reduced by the energy savings created by the MSR.

The MSR Annubars were installed two years ago on critical measurement points. Due to the importance of the measurement and the rugged application conditions, the units have been inspected for corrosion every 6 months. To date, there has been no evidence of corrosion and the measurements have remained within specification. Especially when compared to the Venturi technology previously used at the power station, the Rosemount MSR Annubar has delivered substantial savings, while providing a high performance measurement.
