CFX wins multi-year CFD software order from Siemens Power Generation

12/06/2002

Waterloo, Ontario, December 6, 2002 -- The CFX division of AEA Technology, a supplier of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and services to the power generation, mechanical and chemical process industries, announced a global multi-year commitment by Siemens Power Generation to use CFX for design analysis by engineering teams in both Germany and the United States.

CFX software and expertise is used by Siemens to optimize design and improve efficiency in all parts of their steam and gas turbines.

The CFX suite of integrated software provides Siemens with the ability to simulate and visualize flows inside a turbine, enabling a better understanding of the issues involved in creating superior designs. Siemens Power Generation, Mulheim an der Ruhr, Germany, has used CFX software to develop design rules for highly-efficient steam turbine blades that were subsequently employed to design the world's most efficient steam turbine to date, with 48.5 percent gross efficiency, for the VEAG power plant in Boxberg, Germany.

CFX software was chosen by Siemens because of its capability to analyze a much broader range of turbine design features than the other CFD packages and because of a close correlation between CFX results and physical prototypes. In addition the staff provides very competent technical support and training.

CFX software features innovative, accurate solving technology, generalized grid interface to connect completely dissimilar, non-matching grids, regardless of how they were created; multiple frames of reference to efficiently model flows with rotor/stator interactions; powerful features for subsonic, transonic, or supersonic flows; special fluids analyses for wet steam and refrigerants; advanced turbulence models; and efficient parallel processing.

"We are pleased that Siemens has shown confidence in our CFX software and services for over 10 years," comments Chris Reid, President and CEO of CFX Global. "With this multi-year order we renew our commitment to continue to provide Siemens Power Generation with the advanced CFD tools and services required by a leader in the power generation industry."
