ALSTOM wins supplementary order to Kiira hydropower station in Uganda

Dec. 4, 2002 -- Exercising the option in the contract signed with ALSTOM in August this year for delivery of the fourth unit (40 MW) to Kiira power station (previously known as Owen Falls Extension), Uganda Electricity Generation Co. has awarded ALSTOM a supplementary order for the complete supply and installation of the fifth 40 MW unit in the existing pit.

The contract value is approximately 10 MEUR and the scope of supply includes turbine, generator, control and governing equipment and civil works for installation of the unit in the existing power plant. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2004.

The company's hydro division in Vasteras, Sweden, is responsible for the management of both projects.

During 2000-2002, ALSTOM supplied generators and other electrical equipment for the first three units with Swedish financial support (SIDA). The two units currently on order are being financed by the World Bank.

Kiira Power station is located on the Nile river, 2 kilometers from its source in Lake Victoria. When the units are delivered, the station will have a capacity of 200 MW, which corresponds to 50 % of Uganda's total installed capacity.

ALSTOM is the global specialist in energy and transport infrastructure. The company serves the energy market through its activities in the fields of power generation and power transmission and distribution, and the transport market through its activities in rail and marine.

In fiscal year 2001/02, ALSTOM had annual sales in excess of €23 billion and employed 112,000 people in over 70 countries. ALSTOM is listed on the Paris, London and New York stock exchanges.
