Black & Veatch receives nuclear accreditation from American Society of Mechanical Engineers

Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 20, 2002 -- Black & Veatch Corp. announced that it has been awarded the "N," "NPT," and "NA" Corporate Certificates of Accreditation and also received certification as a Material Organization from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), joining a group of companies operating in the nuclear industry honored by these designations.

"We are delighted to receive this acknowledgement from the organization that literally sets the standards," said Craig Wright, director of ASME quality programs and vice president of construction. "Supply chain management is a vital and irreplaceable component of safe and effective nuclear construction."

ASME is the premier nonprofit, educational and technical organization that sets industrial and manufacturing standards worldwide. The N, NPT, and NA certifications are elements of the larger nuclear accreditation program that assures strict conformance with the ASME codes and standards for nuclear-related equipment and materials.

"As the only U.S. architectural/engineering (AE) firm working on an advanced nuclear reactor design currently under construction," said M. John Robinson, Lungmen Nuclear Project Executive and senior vice president, "Black & Veatch is very well placed to continue to make its mark in the nuclear industry."

The successful execution of the Lungmen project, a 2 x 1,350 MWe Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) nuclear island design project in Taiwan, was instrumental in gaining the Certifications.

The certificates allow Black & Veatch to self-perform all equipment reviews to certify that code requirements are met. Also, these Certificates are transferable to a construction site after a review of the appropriate Quality Assurance Manual. A potential final step for the future will be to demonstrate that Black & Veatch can perform the actual fabrication quality assurance, and thus apply its own N Stamp to fabricated components.

Black & Veatch is distinguished in the nuclear field by its wide array of relationships with vendors and original equipment manufacturers. For the Lungmen project, the company qualified over 60 equipment vendors of nuclear-certified equipment.

The broad and current knowledge base of relevant processes and material represented by the successful performance of Lungmen is now recognized and verified by the ASME certification. The company leverages this knowledge base of the supply chain to contain cost and schedule and to ensure quality on future pursuits and projects.
