PSEG Nuclear finds no evidence of corrosion during visual inspection of Salem Unit 2 reactor head

Hancocks Bridge, NJ, April 22, 2002 -- PSEG Nuclear's Salem Unit 2 is now more than two weeks into its scheduled refueling and maintenance outage. During the outage, PSEG Nuclear performed a visual inspection on the entire reactor head and found no evidence of boric acid deposits and no evidence of boric acid corrosion.

The issue has received an increasing amount of attention recently due to corrosion from boric acid that was discovered on the reactor head at Besse-Davis nuclear plant, another pressurized water reactor.

The company had planned a thorough, 100 percent visual inspection of the reactor vessel head during this outage. During the inspection, operators removed the insulation that covers the reactor head and looked for any signs of boric acid deposits that could be an indication of a leak in one of the penetrations in the reactor head. The examinations were conducted by two certified inspectors observed by representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Since no deposits were found, operators can say that there are no indications of leaks and no signs of any corrosion due to the presence of boric acid.

A similar inspection of Salem Unit 1 was completed in Spring 2001 and no evidence of boric acid deposits or corrosion was found. The Salem Unit 1 reactor head is planned for another 100 percent visual inspection during the fall 2002 refueling outage.

PSEG Nuclear operates the Salem Units 1 and 2, two 1,100 MW pressurized water reactors, and Hope Creek, a 1,050-MW boiling water reactor. The three units are located on one site in Salem County, NJ, and together they comprise the second largest nuclear site in the country.

PSEG Nuclear is a subsidiary of PSEG Power, one of the largest independent power producers and energy trading companies in the U.S., and an affiliate of Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G), New Jersey's largest electric and gas utility.

PSEG Power currently has more than 17,000 MW of electric generating capacity in operation, construction, acquisition or advanced development. In addition to PSEG Nuclear, PSEG Power's subsidiaries include PSEG Fossil, which owns and operates fossil-fueled generating facilities and PSEG Energy Resources and Trade, one of the nation's largest (by volume) energy trading companies.

PSEG Power and PSE&G are subsidiaries of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc., a diversified energy holding company with headquarters in Newark, NJ. For more information, visit www.pseg.com.
